QED in arbitrary linear media: amplifying media

چکیده

Recently, we have developed a unified approach to QED in arbitrary linearly responding media in equilibrium—media that give rise to absorption [Phys. Rev. A 75, (2007) 053813]. In the present paper we show that, under appropriate conditions, the theory can be quite naturally generalized to amplifying media the effect of which is described within the framework of linear response theory. We discuss the limits of validity of the generalized theory and make contact with earlier quantization schemes suggested for the case of linearly and locally responding amplifying dielectric-type media. To illustrate the theory, we present the electromagnetic-field correlation functions that determine the Casimir force in the presence of amplifying media.

Quantum theory of light and noise polarization in nonlinear optics.

We present a consistent quantum theory of the electromagnetic field in nonlinearly responding causal media, with special emphasis on Chi(2) media. Starting from QED in linearly responding causal media, we develop a method to construct the cubic Hamiltonian expressed in terms of the complex nonlinear susceptibility in a quantum mechanically consistent way. In particular, we show that the method ...

Axisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Formulation for Wave Propagation in Unbounded Layered Media

Wave propagation in unbounded layered media with a new formulation of Axisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (AXI-SBFEM) is derived. Dividing the general three-dimensional unbounded domain into a number of independent two-dimensional ones, the problem could be solved by a significant reduction in required storage and computational time. The equations of the corresponding Axisymmetri...

Multilaminate Elastoplastic Model for Granular Media

A multilaminate based model capable of predicting the behavior of granular material on the basis of sliding mechanisms and elastic behavior of particles is presented. The capability of the model to predict the behavior of sand under arbitrary stress paths is examined. The influences of rotation of the direction of principal stress axes and induced anisotropy are included in a rational way witho...

Excess noise for coherent radiation propagating through amplifying random media

The coherent radiation emitted by a laser has a noise spectral density P equal to the time-averaged photocurrent Ī. This noise is called photon shot noise, by analogy with electronic shot noise in vacuum tubes. If the radiation is passed through an amplifying medium, P increases more than Ī because of the excess noise due to spontaneous emission [1]. For an ideal linear amplifier, the (squared)...

A model of mechanisms underlying the influence of media on health behaviour norms.

Media-based interventions are common in health promotion, yet their conceptual underpinnings tend to be based on a simple linear model of direct influence on individuals' health behaviour. Recent studies have suggested that the processes through which media influence health behaviours are actually far more complex. This paper presents a conceptual model of how the medias influence the emergence...
